LAPORAN PELAKSANAAN KEGIATAN “FOREST MANAGEMENT” DI LAHAN HUTAN SEKITAR BANDARA HIROSHIMA JEPANG

Minggu, 12 Februari 2012

REPORT ON FOREST MANAGEMENT ACTIVITY, HIROSHIMA AIRPORT
Sunday, February 12th, 2012

Forest management was one of the activities that have been routinely conducted by the Hiroshima airport staffs and NKK lab. members. On the winter of 2012, this activity was held on the forest around of Hiroshima airport on Sunday, February 12th, 2012 under the coordination of Prof. Nakagoshi. Participated students consist of 6 students of Indonesia (Ida, Beni, Eko, Nety, Eny, Ikhsan) and 4 students of Japan (Daisuke, Genki, Kanno, Simada). Kanno was a junior student (Bachelor students) of the Art and Science Faculty. She was a student who recently joined in this activity.
We gathered at IDEC at 9 am and went by Nakagoshi cars. Japanese students went to the forest land of Hiroshima airport with Prof. Nakagoshi and Indonesia students with Ms. Naomi. On arrival at the destination, Ms. Naomi gave us our gloves and hand warmers. Prof. Nakagoshi explained the reason why forest management was conducted in Hiroshima airport forests. After the briefing, we were given tools by staff for cutting shrubs and helmets for protecting our heads. He also introduced the leadership of this activity.

Implementation of these activities were divided into 5 plots and each plot was assisted by two students in charge of mowing the lawn and shrubs was already high because it can interfere with growth and development of rare plants (Iris rossii Baker) which was deliberately planted in the forest.

Members of the first plot were Beni and Ikhsan and members of the second plots were Eko and Nety. For the third plots were assisted by Genki and Shimada. The fourth and fifth plots were closed to each other. These members were Daisuke and Eny, while for the fifth plots assisted by Ida and Kanno. We were also helped by staffs of Hiroshima Airport for cutting the grass and shrubs that have grown wild. These staffs used the mower to cut the bush plant, therefore job cuts could be completed faster. Our job cuts could be completed at 11:45. After that, we all gathered again in front of the cafeteria to listen of information from the leadership of this activity. These activities finished at 12 am and we toke photo together with staffs of the Hirohima airport.

At 12 am, we got an explanation of the reasons for implementing of these activities while resting in the cafeteria. There were three reasons why forest management activities need to be done in Hiroshima Airport. These reasons were first, many people who have been living around the airport, resulting in the number of missing Iris rossii plants.  The second reason was the plant technicians The plant technician willing to made the original habitat of Iris rossii  through existing technology, but not permitted by the relevant institutions. Forest area was managed by the Satoyama. The third reason was this institution required attracting activities around the Hiroshima airport, therefore they invited Prof. Nakagoshi and his laboratory members to contribute in forest management activities for every year. Local governments (Division of plants) bought the plants and then they planted around Hiroshima airport. We also found some interesting places around Hiroshima airport were Hiroshima airport hotel, Forest Hills Golf & Resort and Sankeien garden. Ms. Naomi provided some snacks and tea for us. All of the menus were Indonesian foods such as lapis legit, chocolate, green beans bakpia, sago cake. The manager of the cafeteria gave turnip soup as dessert. We really liked all the snacks and soups. The last activity, we shopped for unique souvenirs and we left the Hiroshima airport and returned to IDEC at 12.30 pm.
