Report of Excursion; The great wall

Dr. Hyo-Jin Lee (2011 lab graduate)

About IALE Congress
Prof. Nobukazu NAKAGOSHI and his students in Hiroshima Univ. were attended ‘The 8th IALE World Congress’ in Beijin, China in 2011. The congress was held with the theme ‘Landscpae Ecology for Sustainable Environment and Culture’ and there were a lot of presentations with various topics in various fields. It was very excellent opportunity to know the trend of international landscape ecology research and to obtained many information and knowledge.

About Excursion after Congress (The Great Wall)
After attending the congress, the students in Prof. NAKAGOSH’s Lab reported about the congress. Each student selects the some part of congress and makes a report. In my case, I selected ‘Congress Excursion’ especially excursion of ‘The Great Wall’. I report the excursion of the Great Wall and my impression.

The congress excursion was in 21th Aug 2011, and it was the next day of last day of congress. There were three courses for excursion (1. City tours, 2. Rural tours, 3. Post-Congress Excursion) and all students of Prof. Nakagoshi Lab were selected ‘City tours’ to visit ‘The Great Wall’. We departed for ‘The Great Wall’ from China National Convention Center in the downtown of Beijing City by bus. There was no traffic jam and it took about 2 hour. During the moving to the Great Wall, a guide explained history of Beijing City and the Great Wall. He said that he graduated college of tourism and finished special course for English guide, and his explanation was continued during 2 hour. I couldn’t enjoy the sleep in the bus but I could get much information about the Chinese history.

We arrived the Great Wall and many people were waiting in front of gate to enter the Great Wall. Behind of the gate the Great Wall was there. However, the slope of the Great Wall looks very steep and the temperature was high and sunshine was too strong. So I was little worry to climb the Great Wall. But I climbed the Great Wall with big expectation and the Great Wall shows a magnificent view. It was valuable experience.

The Great Wall of China is a series of fortifications running in general east to west through the entire northern part of China, built originally in part to protect the northern borders of the Chinese Empire. The most comprehensive archaeological survey, using advanced technologies, has concluded that all the walls measure 8,851.8 km.
The area of The Great Wall we visit was the well-managed place for tourist, so sightseeing was very convenience. Many Chinese families and foreign tourist were visited this place. The slope looks steep but it was not so difficult to go up the wall because of the stairway. But there was no shelter to avoid the strong sunshine, and no bench to take a rest on the Great Wall. I know that it is impossible to make some shelter or bench on the great cultural heritage. I just want to recommend you to visit The Great Wall in spring or autumn to avoid strong sunshine of Beijing’s summer. If you visit The Great Wall, it will show you magnificent view and you will get a valuable experience.

Impression of the Congress by Reporter
In general, this congress gave various important insights to participants especially who study about landscape ecology. We not only showed our research progress and results but also have an opportunity to discuss with other researchers. All presentation at this congress showed that it was important to consider about sustainability of environment and culture, and landscape ecology can play an important role to improve sustainability.
In my case, I could meet other researchers who have high interest about my research and I discussed about my research with them. Actually, time was limited to discuss about mutual research in congress place, but I could keep in contact with them after congress to improve my research. Meeting with other researchers who conduct similar research with mine was very interesting experience for me, and it was the good opportunity to improve my research and to get the new ideas.
Finally, I am thankful to Prof. Nakagoshi in Hiroshima Univ. and the the Global Environment Leaders (GELs) program in Hiroshima Univ. for supporting my visit to attend this world congress.
