Mid-Congress Excursion
Seven mid-congress excursion routes were designed for the participants to experience Chinese cultural landscapes in urban and rural areas, as well as practices in landscape design and planning. There were wonderful excursions to the Great-wall, the Forbidden City and other historical places in China.

Impression of the Congress by Reporter
Overall the 8th IALE world Congress was highly interesting with the opportunity to hear, share, discuss, and to interact with a wide variety of participants. It was a great experience to attend such a renowed international congress. I gained a deeper understanding of the future of landscape ecology. It was also fascinating to get a clear scientific point of view from people in other fields. It enabled me to have a better overview of state-of-the-art research within the field and I gained many inspirational ideas from many leading researchers.
On the other hand, I also learned that Beijing has several social and environmental problems. I experienced first-hand air pollution and observed the effects of high population density on the city’s transportation system, waste disposal and urban housing. Through a lab-mate’s study, I also learned about the water pollution in Beijing.
Finally, attending the congress was a completely new experience for me, I met a lot of interesting and nice people, the conference was well-organized, the food in China was delicious, and Beijing with its landscapes and history was an interesting place to visit.
Lastly but not least, I am also thankful to the the Global Environment Leaders (GELs) program, Hiroshima University for supporting my visit to attend this world congress.
